I withdrew money from the ATM, but I didn’t receive any cash: here’s what to do.
Discovering that an ATM has debited your account without dispensing your cash is a high-stress situation, but it is almost always a resolvable technical error. These “failed dispenses” occur due to mechanical jams, software glitches, or temporary connectivity issues between the machine and the banking network.
Immediate Action Steps
If you are still at the machine, follow this protocol to protect your funds and document the event.
- Wait and Observe: Stay at the machine for at least 3-5 minutes. Occasionally, a mechanical delay can result in the cash being dispensed late. Ensure the session has completely ended and the screen has returned to the “Welcome” prompt.
- Check for “Traps”: Inspect the cash slot. Criminals sometimes place “cash claws” or thin covers over the dispenser to trap bills. If the slot looks tampered with, do not try to fix it; take a photo and call the police.
- Collect Documentation: Take a photo of the ATM’s screen if it displays an error message. Most importantly, keep the receipt if one was printed. If no receipt was issued, write down the exact time, the ATM ID number (usually found on a sticker on the front), and the location.
- Check Your Mobile App: Refresh your banking app to see if the transaction shows as “Pending” or “Completed.” In some cases, the system detects the failure and auto-reverses the transaction within minutes.
