Hungarian Chimney Cake Recipe (Kürtőskalács)

Ingredients

For the Dough

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm milk
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/3 cup melted butter
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp salt

For Coating

  • 1/2 cup melted butter
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 tsp cinnamon

Optional Toppings

  • Crushed walnuts
  • Cocoa powder
  • Coconut flakes
  • Chocolate sprinkles


Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine warm milk, yeast, and 1 tablespoon sugar. Let sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, remaining sugar, and salt.
  3. Add eggs, melted butter, vanilla, and yeast mixture. Knead until smooth and elastic, about 8–10 minutes.
  4. Cover and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  5. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  6. Roll dough into long strips about 1 inch wide.
  7. Wrap strips around greased rolling-pin handles or metal tubes, slightly overlapping the dough.
  8. Brush with melted butter and roll in cinnamon sugar.
  9. Place on a baking tray so the rolls are suspended and can rotate slightly while baking.
  10. Bake for 15–20 minutes, turning once halfway through, until golden brown.
  11. Brush with more butter immediately after baking and coat with extra cinnamon sugar or toppings of choice.
