Best Banana Pudding
This classic, no-bake banana pudding is a crowd-pleasing dessert that layers creamy vanilla custard with crisp vanilla wafers and fresh, ripe bananas. It is a staple of comfort food baking that relies on high-quality pantry shortcuts to achieve a rich, bakery-style finish.
Ingredients
- 1 pkg (14 oz) store-bought vanilla wafers (e.g., Nilla brand)
- 6 large ripe bananas, sliced
- 1 can (14 oz) sweetened condensed milk
- 1 pkg (5 oz) instant vanilla pudding mix (e.g., Jell-O brand)
- 3 cups cold whole milk
- 1 tub (8 oz) frozen whipped topping, thawed (divided)
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/2 stick unsalted butter, melted (optional)
Instructions
1. Prepare the Pudding Base
In a large mixing bowl, combine the cold whole milk, instant vanilla pudding mix, and sweetened condensed milk. Whisk thoroughly until the mixture is smooth and begins to thicken. Stir in the vanilla extract and the optional melted butter for added richness.
2. Fold in the Cream
Gently fold half of the thawed whipped topping into the pudding mixture using a spatula. This lightens the base, creating a fluffy, mousse-like texture that balances the dense sweetness of the condensed milk.
3. Layer the Wafers and Bananas
In a large glass 9×13 inch baking dish or a deep trifle bowl, place a single layer of vanilla wafers across the bottom. Follow this with a layer of sliced bananas, ensuring even coverage so every bite contains fruit.
4. Assemble the Dessert
Pour half of the pudding mixture over the banana layer and spread it to the edges. Repeat the layers: another layer of wafers, another layer of bananas, and the remaining pudding. Finish the top with the remaining whipped topping.
5. Chill and Set
For the best results, cover the dish and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or ideally overnight. This chilling period allows the vanilla wafers to soften slightly into a cake-like consistency as they absorb moisture from the pudding.
6. Garnish and Serve
Just before serving, garnish the top with additional crushed vanilla wafers or whole wafers around the edges for a decorative touch.
