Homemade insecticide: spray it and get rid of ants, spiders, mosquitoes, and moths

The mix of white vinegar and essential oils creates a powerful, non-toxic deterrent for common household pests. While commercial sprays rely on heavy chemicals, this homemade solution uses acidic properties and strong aromatics to disrupt pest trails and repel them from your living spaces.

The Recipe

  • 1 cup White Vinegar: The acetic acid dissolves the pheromone trails ants use to navigate.
  • 1 cup Water: Dilutes the mixture to ensure it won’t damage common household surfaces.
  • 15 drops Peppermint or Eucalyptus Oil: These scents are highly aversive to spiders, mosquitoes, and moths.
  • 1 tsp Liquid Dish Soap: Helps the mixture “stick” to surfaces and pests upon contact.

Application Guide

1

Combined liquids

Use a clean spray bottle

Pour the vinegar, water, and essential oils into the bottle. Avoid using a bottle that previously held bleach or heavy detergents.

2

Add the binder

The

Add the dish soap last. This acts as a surfactant, allowing the oil and water to mix more effectively rather than separating.

3

Target entry points

Focus on the perimeter

Spray along baseboards, window sills, and under sinks. For ants, spray the entire visible line to erase their scent path.

4

Wipe and repeat

Maintain the barrier

Wipe up any excess liquid after 10 minutes. Reapply every 2–3 days or after cleaning the area to keep the repellent scent fresh.

Expert Tip: If you are dealing specifically with moths in a pantry or closet, soak cotton balls in this solution (minus the water) and place them in the corners of shelves. The concentrated scent of peppermint is a natural deterrent for cloth-eating larvae.
