The fastest way to clear your windshield involves a specific combination of temperature control and airflow to equalize the moisture inside and outside the vehicle. While it seems counterintuitive to use the A/C in winter, it is the most effective tool for dehumidification.
The 4-Step Defrost Sequence
1
Turn the heater on full blast
Max heat
Hot air holds more moisture than cold air. High heat helps evaporate the condensation resting on the inside of the glass.
2
Turn the A/C on
Dehumidifier mode
The Air Conditioning system pulls moisture out of the air as it passes over the cooling coils. This “dries” the air before it hits the windshield, preventing further fogging.
3
Turn off air recirculation
Bring in fresh air
Winter air is naturally dry. By bringing in outside air, you replace the humid air (caused by your breath and damp floor mats) with drier air from the environment.
4
Crack the windows
Equalize pressure
Opening your windows just an inch for a few seconds helps exchange the humid interior air with dry exterior air even faster.
Why This Works
The fog on your windshield is caused by surface condensation. When the warm, moist air inside your car touches the cold glass, it reaches its “dew point” and turns into liquid water. By using the A/C to dry the air and the heater to warm the glass, you attack the problem from both a humidity and temperature perspective.
Safety Warning: Never pour boiling or hot water on a frozen windshield. The “thermal shock” (the rapid expansion of the glass) can cause the entire windshield to crack or shatter instantly.
