The practice of hanging a wire coat hanger over an inward-opening door handle is a low-tech security measure used primarily by travelers in hotels or rentals.
How the Security Hack Works
This method serves as a primitive alarm system and physical deterrent:
- Audible Warning: If someone attempts to turn the handle from the outside, the metal hanger will rattle or fall against the door. The sound of metal hitting the floor or the door serves as an immediate alert to a sleeping occupant.
- Leverage Interference: On certain styles of lever handles, a specifically positioned hanger can make it slightly more difficult for the handle to be fully depressed, potentially slowing down an intruder.
- Visual Deterrent: In some instances, if a portion of the hanger is visible through a gap or reflects light, it may signal to a would-be intruder that the occupant has taken extra steps to secure the room.

While often shared as a “travel hack,” this method has significant limitations compared to dedicated security devices:
