Cinnamon Roll French Toast Roll-Ups
These Cinnamon Roll French Toast Roll-Ups offer a clever, portable twist on two breakfast classics by using flattened bread to mimic the spiral of a traditional cinnamon roll.
Cinnamon Roll French Toast Roll-Ups
Ingredients
The Roll-Ups:
- 8-10 slices white sandwich bread (crusts removed)
- 4 oz cream cheese, softened
- ¼ cup granulated sugar
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
The Egg Wash:
- 2 large eggs
- 3 tbsp whole milk
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
The Glaze:
- ½ cup powdered sugar
- 2 tbsp maple syrup or milk
- Extra cinnamon for dusting
Preparation
1. Flatten and Fill
Use a rolling pin to flatten each slice of bread until it is thin and pliable. In a small bowl, mix the softened cream cheese with half of the cinnamon-sugar mixture. Spread a thin layer of the mixture over each slice of bread.
2. Roll and Dip
Roll each bread slice up tightly into a cylinder. In a shallow bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, and vanilla. Dip each roll-up into the egg wash, ensuring all sides are lightly coated but not oversaturated.
3. Sauté to Golden
Melt 1 tablespoon of butter in a non-stick skillet over medium heat. Place the roll-ups seam-side down first to “lock” the spiral. Cook for 2–3 minutes, turning frequently, until all sides are golden brown and crisp.
4. Finish and Glaze
Immediately toss the hot roll-ups in the remaining cinnamon-sugar mixture. Whisk the powdered sugar and syrup together to create a thick glaze. Drizzle the glaze generously over the rolls and finish with a light dusting of cinnamon before serving.
Success Tip: Removing the crusts is a non-negotiable step for this recipe. The crust is too rigid to roll tightly and will cause the bread to tear, preventing that perfect “cinnamon roll” spiral appearance.
