Egg & Ham Breakfast Sandwich with Melty Cheddar
For a breakfast that hits all the right notes—savory ham, creamy eggs, and that essential “cheese pull”—this sandwich is a reliable classic. It balances the crunch of butter-toasted sourdough with a rich, soft filling.
Egg & Ham Breakfast Sandwich with Melty Cheddar
Ingredients
- 2 slices bread (thick-cut white or sourdough)
- 3 tbsp unsalted butter (divided)
- 1 slice sharp cheddar cheese
- 2-3 slices deli ham
- 1 large egg
- Salt and freshly cracked black pepper to taste
- Fresh parsley or chives (optional garnish)
Instructions
- Prepare the Bread: Spread 1 tablespoon of butter on one side of each bread slice. Heat a large skillet over medium heat and place the bread butter-side down. Toast until golden brown and crisp, then remove and set aside.
- Warm the Ham: In the same skillet, add a small pat of butter. Lightly sear the ham slices for about 30 seconds per side until warmed through and slightly caramelized. Move the ham to the side of the pan.
- Cook the Egg: Add the remaining butter to the skillet. Crack the egg into the pan. For a classic breakfast sandwich, over-medium is ideal—fry until the white is set but the yolk remains jammy. Season with salt and pepper.
- Melt the Cheese: Place the sharp cheddar slice directly onto the hot egg while it is still in the pan. Cover with a lid for 30 seconds to ensure the cheese is fully melted and draped over the egg.
- Assemble: On the toasted side of one bread slice, layer the seared ham, followed by the cheesy egg. Top with the second slice of bread, toasted side facing out.
- Final Sear: If you prefer an extra-melty interior, place the assembled sandwich back in the skillet for 30 seconds per side, pressing down lightly with a spatula.
- Serve: Slice diagonally and garnish with fresh herbs if desired. Serve immediately while the cheese is at its meltiest.
