How do you keep mice and rats out of the house? Just clean the floor with this product that everyone has.

Peppermint oil is a highly effective natural repellent for keeping mice and rats out of your home. Rodents have an incredibly keen sense of smell, and the intense, sharp aroma of peppermint acts as a powerful irritant to their sensitive nasal passages, driving them away from treated areas.

The Peppermint Floor Cleaner Method

To turn this household staple into a whole-home barrier, you can integrate it directly into your cleaning routine.

  • Create the Solution: Mix 2 teaspoons of 100% pure peppermint essential oil into a bucket of warm water. For better emulsification, add a few drops of liquid dish soap.
  • Target Entry Points: Focus your mopping on areas where rodents are most likely to enter or travel, such as baseboards, the space behind kitchen appliances, and near doorways or pantry corners.
  • Consistency is Key: Unlike chemical poisons, the scent of peppermint will dissipate over time. Mop your high-traffic rodent areas at least twice a week to maintain a strong scent barrier.

Strategic Reinforcement

While mopping the floor creates a general deterrent, focusing on specific “hot spots” will significantly increase your success rate.

  • Soaked Cotton Balls: Place cotton balls soaked in undiluted peppermint oil in cabinets, behind the refrigerator, and near pipe openings under sinks.
  • Identify the Source: Peppermint oil works best as a preventative measure. Ensure you are also sealing external cracks with steel wool and caulk, as rodents cannot chew through the metal fibers.
  • Refresh the Scent: Replace the cotton balls every 5–7 days or whenever you can no longer smell the peppermint when opening a cabinet.

Safety Note: If you have pets, use peppermint oil with caution. While it is a great natural alternative to toxic baits, high concentrations of essential oils can be irritating or toxic to cats and dogs if ingested or touched. Always ensure the floor is dry before letting pets back into the room.
