How to quickly get rid of bed bugs, cockroaches, fruit flies and other insects from our homes.

Natural Strategies for Pest Elimination

Maintaining a pest-free home often requires a combination of targeted baiting and environmental deterrents. Using simple household ingredients like baking soda, boric acid, and essential oils can effectively disrupt the life cycles of common household insects without the immediate need for harsh industrial chemicals.

Cockroaches

Cockroaches are primarily attracted to moisture and food debris. A dual approach using a lure and a lethal agent is the most effective DIY method.

  • Baking Soda & Sugar: Mix equal parts granulated sugar and baking soda. The sugar acts as a lure, while the baking soda reacts with the cockroach’s digestive system, causing internal gas buildup that leads to its death.
  • Boric Acid: Apply a very thin layer of boric acid powder in dark, dry areas like behind refrigerators or under sinks. It acts as a desiccant and a stomach poison when the insects groom themselves.
  • Garlic Deterrent: Placing whole garlic cloves or sprays near entry points can act as a natural repellent for various crawling insects and even small rodents.

Bed Bugs

Bed bugs are notoriously difficult to eliminate because they hide in tiny crevices and can survive for months without feeding.

  • Heat Treatment: This is the most effective non-chemical method. Wash all bedding, curtains, and clothing in hot water and dry them on the highest heat setting for at least 30 minutes.
  • Diatomaceous Earth (Food Grade): Sprinkle this fine powder around bed frames, baseboards, and carpet edges. It works mechanically by piercing the insects’ exoskeletons, causing them to dehydrate and die.
  • Steam Cleaning: Use a high-pressure steamer on mattresses and upholstered furniture. The intense heat kills bed bugs and their eggs on contact.

Fruit Flies and House Flies

Flies are attracted to fermenting organic matter and sweet liquids. Traps are generally more effective than sprays for these pests.

  • Apple Cider Vinegar Trap: Fill a small bowl with apple cider vinegar and add a few drops of dish soap. The flies are attracted to the fermenting scent but the soap breaks the liquid’s surface tension, causing them to sink.
  • Clove & Lemon Repellent: Poke several whole cloves into a halved lemon and place it on your counter. The strong scent is highly unappealing to house flies.
  • Essential Oil Sprays: A mixture of water and peppermint, eucalyptus, or lemongrass oil can be sprayed around windows and doors to discourage flies from entering.

1

Identify and Clean

Eliminate the source

Locate the nesting area or food source (standing water, overripe fruit, or crumbs) and clean the area thoroughly with vinegar or soap.

2

Apply Targeted Baits

Strategically placed traps

Place sugar/baking soda mixes for roaches or vinegar traps for flies in high-traffic areas, ensuring they are out of reach of pets.

3

Seal Entry Points

Prevent re-entry

Use caulk to seal cracks in baseboards and mesh screens for windows to prevent new pests from entering the home.
